Mother Mercy book cover

A few years ago, I shared a video with top resources for writers. I also gave a presentation for AWC 2023, but it’s been a while so I wanted to share a revised list for 2025. Since I intentionally keep my articles brief, this will be in several parts.

My top 10 free resources for 2025:

  1.  Weather Underground website historical weather you can search by city, zip code, or airport code. Filter by day, week, or month. And the records go back to the 1930s although the further back you go the more spotty the records are.
  2. Date and Time is a clock and calendar for everything. It can calculate future dates, change time zones, and follow the sun, moon, and stars. If you need it, Date and Time can probably do it.
  3. On This Day website choose a date and find associated historical events, birthdays, or related media. You can click on the title, “On This Day” for the daily results, or search specific dates.
  4. Internet Archive website a lot of everything archive.org, per the site, is an “Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free texts, movies, software, music, websites, and more.” It’s just about everything.
  5. Video lectures while there are others, the complete course from BYU from Brandon Sanderson, is the one I have taken and it is one of the highest quality writing resources free or otherwise.
  6. Free conferences AWC or AuthorTube Writing Conference, is an annual writing conference on YouTube with many different speakers and topics. They also keep the playlist up, so you can watch past sessions for free as well with 2022, 2023, and 2024 currently available and the next session coming June 2025, so mark your calendar!
  7. Free submissions you can find places to submit your stories for free. While most free submissions do not offer any prizes, if what you’re looking for is publication, Submittable offers a secure way to submit. Just click Discover and filter for ‘no fee’.
  8. Free feedback there are a lot of places in writers spaces where you can get free feedback, although this will usually be on shorter pieces of work or chapters. Once streamer who does feedback, coffeequills on twitch, the cost is digital points which are received by watching the channel.
  9. Online and digital museum tours and exhibits are offered online by many sites, especially museums in larger cities.
  10. Writing groups there are various free groups on Facebook and discord which have different requirements, but if you search your genre, you can usually find a Facebook group for your area and by following AuthorTubers in your genre, they will typically promote and share up to date links to their discords.

I’ll be sharing more resources for 2025, so be sure to follow this blog and sign up for my quarterly newsletter!
